A post about nothing

Is anybody working today? Or are you just sitting at your desk trying to make busy? I think most people took the day off. I really don’t feel like posting today. Well, I do but I feel like posting stupid time wasting stuff like suggesting you go visit Kitten Wars or something. Kitten Wars is a great way to waste time -may the best kitten win!

Another great way to kill time at your desk today is to visit Things My Girlfriend and I have Argued About (let your cursor rest over Margaret’s picture for a cheap site gag). The writing is superlative. For example:

Nothing keeps a relationship on its toes so much as lively debate. Fortunate, then, that my girlfriend and I agree on absolutely nothing. At all.

Combine utter, polar disagreement on everything, ever, with the fact that I am a text-book Only Child, and she is a violent psychopath, and we’re warming up. Then factor in my being English while she is German, which not only makes each one of us personally and absolutely responsible for the history, and the social and cultural mores of our respective countries, but also opens up a whole field of sub-arguments grounded in grammatical and semantic disputes and, well, just try saying anything and walking away.

Grimreader is supposed to be coming up with a light post for us today but I don’t know where he is on that. Since he didn’t have to work today he’s probably blogging in his bathrobe with a cat on his lap. I keep telling him it’s hard to strike fear in the hearts of his staff (he’s the boss) when he’s got cat hair sticking to his goatee but he doesn’t listen. Grimreader thinks you should visit The Best Page in the Universe. You’ll find plenty to offend you there. For example, his critique of children’s artwork in I am better than your kids:

If you work in an office with lots of people, chances are that you work with a person who hangs pictures up that their kids have drawn. The pictures are always of some stupid flower or a tree with wheels. These pictures suck; I could draw pictures much better. In fact, I can spell, do math and run faster than your kids. So being that my skills are obviously superior to those of children, I’ve taken the liberty to judge art work done by other kids on the internet. I’ll be assigning a grade A through F for each piece

With tongue firmly in cheek, Maddox insults everyone from Republicans (Who would make a better president Bush or a box of Tic-Tacs?) to vegetarians (For every animal you don’t eat, I’m going to eat three). Everyone’s sure to be offended in between laughs. Don’t take him too seriously.

I’ve been fielding calls from friends new and old, far and wide all day. I guess it’s that about that time when you put the finishing touches on this year to begin the new one. Have you decided what you’d like to do next year? Any grand plans or big ideas? I’m thinking of starting a new blog on just pattern making and sewing. I’d put more of that up on this one but worry about running off people who are looking for a broader focus than mechanics.

Jinjer says it’s time we meet. All of us. I know she’s right but it’s hard for me to make the first step. I’m lousy at organizing events. Jinjer says Carol is good at that sort of thing so maybe she’ll step up to the plate. I’d think a central location with an existing event would be good. Say, Las Vegas for the Magic Show. I hate Vegas but it’s easy to get in and out of. Food and hotels are inexpensive but there’s so much clanging noise and busy lights it drives me wild. Maybe I can stand a get together, after which I’ll just go and hide under a bed or in a closet somewhere. Magic would be a good event if you haven’t ever attended a market or need to do some sourcing stuff.

I think a blog on just sewing and pattern making would be great! We worked about half a day today and we have a few things to finish up tommorow too. Next year I see myself really focusing on pattern making and of course making fonts!

I would love to see an educational blog on sewing and patternmaking, if that is the goal. I understand your concerns, but I really love your writing style, and am always excited to see various methods for making garments and patterns!

My big plans for 06 is to, as Jess said, really focus on brining my clothing business to fruition, as it is every year…

What I hope to happen next year is really focus on buying a nicer house, getting enough money to buy that house. Investing in land is the direction I want to head in. I know I won’t get the house next year but I’ve got to start planning and plotting.

I feel like we need an extra little income boost from somewhere, so I want to focus on making that happen with some sort of side business. Several secret plans to make that happen. I want to not be so wasteful with money as I was this year. I really blowed a lot of money on stupid things in 05. But I have no regrets about it, I needed to get some things out of my system while I’m young.

I may get back to work on the embroidery business I’ve been threatening to launch. That is if I can get Jess’ help, which I’m not holding my breath.

Last year’s business we created clipartcrafts.com was a total and utter flop. A waste of time. We overestimated the demand for computer clipart for scrapbooking. We will probably be getting rid of that next year or revamping it in a new way.

  4. I was also thinking the TALA fabric show in LA might be good for all of us to get together this Spring. It’d be awesome to meet all of you!

Note: for those who like to fly Jet Blue, last time I went I flew into Long Beach and took the metro all the way to LA, just a few blocks from CMC. It wasn’t hard…

Changes for the new year: I’ve been working with a coach (she’s really good and works over the phone if anyone wants a referral), so I feel pretty empowered to make some real changes in my life this year. My goal-within-a-goal is to banish the habits/attitudes that keep me from growing– like false pride, procrastination, unrealistic commitments & guilt. (all interrelated, you may notice). Anyway, I feel hopeful instead of overwhelmed for the first time in a long while.

    peace & prosperity to all,
    Jinjer

I got to stay longer than anybody at the office (yippee…) because somebody called that they wanted to make a delivery and I of course said the poor kid (the only one under me in seniority) could go on home and I’d wait it out, which of course proved to be a false alarm; nobody came…I spent a couple of hours tidying up and reading the huge stack of resumes from people who applied for the job I finally got. Good Grief, no wonder they thought they could find somebody better…could these things be really true? Why did these geniouses even apply for this little job? I got to keep it (my supervisor recommended me in the first place when she realized she was moving away) when none of these wonderous souls bothered to show up for the interview. Now I have to hire a replacement for the kid when he goes back to college in January. Ah, the working life…

As usual, my posts come in multiple parts…I need to go easy on that “post” button.

Hey, getting together is a fantastic idea! I’m pretty good at that stuff; I organized an internet-friends group retreat a few years ago. I would really like, though, to meet at some kind of trade show, as that’s something that would be a first for me, and having such expert company would be so awesome. How about a “meeting up” topic on the discussion board to pull it together?? Kathleen, I’m not into noisy/bright/hectic either. My idea would be a quiet soothing place to go to at the end of the day or to escape to at any time. That way no matter how frenetic the show, there’s an escape.

When is the Las Vegas trade show? That does sound like it’d work well if we can escape the noise, glitz and smoke. Come in and get our collective act together at least a day in advance?

Get pointers and have the chance to chill out a little before dashing into the fray.

I nominate Susan for logistics for LV (thanks anyway, Jinjer)…

Peaceful Valley is a fabulous place for a retreat, should LV get us together and eager for more. I live about five minutes’ walk from the ranch where these can be held – no bias here.
