I need to get out more. And by out, I don’t mean outside which is where I’ve been all weekend attempting to dig out decaying tree stumps. My “progress” is sufficient to make a woodsman weep in unselfconscious pity. Blithely clueless, I didn’t realize the clocks moved ahead this weekend and spent an hour searching for “computer system time virus” because my computer’s time had moved ahead an hour. After dim results, I wondered if the computer-time-synchronicity source (the NIST internet time server, mine is time-b.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov) had been the subject of an attack. Sure enough that server was rated “very busy”. Ah hah! I thought. A denial of service attack has rendered it useless, the server in an unrelenting loop searching for its arms and legs in a doomed re-boot. Obviously somebody around here is overdue for a re-boot.
The above being, obviously, sheer avoidance. Do I speak of the tragic earthquake in Japan? If so, how? I have been consumed by the vast tragedy, its loss of loves and lives. There or here, if you are reading this, please tell your countrymen we are much preoccupied and distressed with their losses. Care well for you and yours, we send healing such as we are able. Should those here care to do more, there is this.

Stump grinder. Rent one. It won’t help with your dst issues, and it certainly won’t help with Japan, but if you want to get a stump or two out without working for days, you’ll need one.
I’m pretty consumed by the story in Japan right now, too.
Thanks for the time humor. It brings back some funny stories from when I was a grad student at a NIST lab. The physicist/professor who wrote the nation’s time-keeping software taught me why my bathroom scale was losing its calibration…. My roommate and I then calibrated our bathroom scale with actual weight standards from the Boulder NIST lab.
Ahh, good times.
It’s hard to think of anything else than Japan..
But if you’re not just working yourself to death in an effort at distraction, I second the renting of a stump grinder. We know you like good tools, there’s no reason not to use them just because it’s a somewhat different domain than what you’re used to.
