The Ballad of CPSIA (mp3) has finally been put to sound and vocals.
Steve Lamar wrote:
I can’t remember all the genesis but I know some of the lyrics were written by others (not the original author) in the past few days so I don’t think there is a single lyrics credit you can make there. Vocals are Lucy Lapidus.

The Ballad Of CPSIA (Sung to the Tune of the Ballad of Jed Clampett (The Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song))

Lyrics by Various (Sarah Natividad started it off)
Vocals by Lucy Lapidus

Now gather 'round my children, and listen to me tell
Of a time when toys were handmade, and blankets we did sell
But then one day it happened, and on that fateful day
We lost our children's industry to CPSIA.

The Act that is. New regs. New law.

Now Christmas time was comin', the kids had all been good,
And snow was lightly fallin' upon the neighborhood.
Mom opened up her inbox, and there what did it say?
"Save work-at-home moms, call Congress now, it's CPSIA!"

Senators, that is. Fill their inbox.

At first Mom didn't understand, "They surely can't mean me,
For I've worked hard to make sure all my products are lead-free."
But Fashion Incubator had laid it out for sure.
Our businesses would have to close, or else they'd make us poor.

Costs, that is. Testing labs. XRF guns.

So eagerly Mom searched the web, there surely must be ways
To make it not apply to her, she searched for days and days,
But everything she read was dire, the fix it sure was in,
Her business it was doomed that day, with no way that she could win.

Small biz, that is. Little guy. Little voice.

We all support safe children’s stuff we want to make that plain.
But compliance is a nightmare and the testing is insane
They make us test for lead in stuff where lead just don’t exist
I wish they’d asked my thoughts on this but now I’m just plain pissed.

Cotton, that is. No lead there.

The goodwill stores and libraries are trying to guess the law.
Are childrens books and used girls dresses safe to sell at all?
And what about the stuff that the hand crafters do make?
Don’t fret. Its just your livelihood that the government will take.

Guilty, that is. Until proven innocent.

Now there had been a meeting up in Washington D.C.
So folks could talk directly with the safety agencies.
They'd pleaded dear, "Oh won't you hear what else we have to say?
The Tenth of February is our Bankruptcy Day."

Bailouts, that is. Tough times. Tough luck.

Rick Woldenberg stood up to speak, the podium was his,
Upon deaf ears his words did fall, explaining why his biz
Could not do the impossible, and test every S.K.U.
This law’s not fair. Its got to change or we will bid adieu.

Retroactivity, that is. These goods were safe last year.

Now Mom has been a bloggin’ with other working mom’s like her.
She’s been on radio, TV, and once on NPR
She hopes that Congress listens to her very desperate prayer.
Fix CPSIA right now so she does not despair.

Stay in business, that is. You all come back now.

Oh that's hilarious! I'd kinda envisioned a minor key, but then again you wouldn't want me singing it, so I'm glad somebody else did it.

So, who's going to play the guitar accompaniment? I think there's a reg somewhere, you can't have a folk protest song without a guitar accompaniment.
