Pattern making for Professionals

Updated 10/30/09: I’m out of these DVDs but will have this one and another one (not yet announced) available soon. If you want to be notified, email me and put DVD in the subject line. Thanks!

This is an announcement to let you know that I have DVD/video copies of Pattern Making for Professionals available for sale. The cost is $45 USD and you can buy it via Paypal by clicking the Donation button in the upper right corner. Just make note of your purchase and specify either video or DVD. The feature includes:

Part One: Introduction and orientation
Tool selection, terminology and conventions used in the industry. This section will be particularly useful if you’ve only had a design school background and haven’t actually worked in a sewing plant. Even if you don’t intend to make your own patterns, you should use these standards to determine the professionalism of someone you hire as these are the core competencies of an acceptable candidate. Similarly, your patterns should also follow these conventions rather than those you may have seen in design school textbooks. These standards reflect the values of a commercial environment.

Part Two: Basic techniques
The development of 9 different bodice styles are illustrated start to finish. These styles provide exercises in core competencies such as pivoting and slashing, shirring, and dart marking among other things. A 1/2 scale copy of a front bodice is provided for this exercise. To use it, staple it to a manila folder and cut it out.

Part Three: Block to vest conversion
As we all know, it’s one thing to have a basic block with which to render styles and another thing to do something productive with it. In this portion, I’ll show how to convert a basic fitting shell into a vest pattern with the appropriate wearing ease. Also included is how to draft a flat collar with an under collar -and no, collars are not 2-per in real life- and a not to be missed tutorial on how to draft linings. Lastly, you’ll see how to make a button guide, eliminating all the guesswork of button and detail placement to ensure accurate replication across units.

The 2 DVD (or video) set comes with a user’s guide, patterns, sketches, the vest conversion (ease details), sample sketch sheet (to use in your business), a sample direction card (full size) and a pattern hook. The cost is $45 USD plus $3 for media mail shipping or $5 for priority mail shipping. You can buy by clicking the Donation button (feel free to donate too!) or you can call me at (575) 525-1577 to pay with visa/mastercard (preferred). You can mail payment to: Apparel Technical Svcs, 1149 West Picacho, Las Cruces NM 88005. Last but not least, you can also order it from SouthStar Supply.

Lastly, most of you will be surprised to know this product features yours truly. I never mention it because I hate it. I am one of those people who does not like being the focus of attention with a camera on me. I don’t even like looking at myself in the mirror. Plus, I’m kind of chunky in the video -heavier than I am now (made in 1996).

I have been sewing for years now but hate cutting out patterns from the store. I am looking for a DVD that will show me how to make patterns. I am a hands on person so I just can’t read a book. Please contact me so that you can tell me more.
