Going to Phoenix

I’d intended to post some other stuff today but I got behind and I have to leave early. I’m leaving for Phoenix to run the charity marathon I’ve been training for since September. I am still soliciting donations for Leukemia research (tax deductible). I had to raise $2,900 to run in this marathon. Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough donations so I had to pay quite a bit of money from my own pocket. Still, it’s not too late. If people donate now, the marathon people will reimburse what I had to put on my credit card. Considering we have 4,000 visitors a day to this blog, I was minimally dismayed that so few chose to support me when I do so much to help everyone else for nothing. Running this marathon has taught me who my friends really are. If everyone had given a dollar, that would have covered it. So, I decided to limit the forum to people who support the work I’m doing. Also, all future tutorials will only be posted in the forum, rather than here. That’s why I haven’t been doing tutorials lately, why should I give everything away to people who don’t think this site is worth one lousy dollar?

DEs aren’t the only ones who benefit from this site; I was very disappointed that none of the businesses that I link to or refer people to made a donation. Can you believe that? The only business off the hook is my one paid advertiser and Patternworks who sends me cookies a couple of times a year. It doesn’t seem quite fair. You’d think that with all the business I send people, they’d donate and even get a tax deduction, but nope, didn’t happen. To date, not one single business mentioned or linked to from this site has given a donation -only DEs and other bloggers. When I get back on Tuesday, I’ll be posting the names and links to everyone who donated to support me in the marathon -nearly all of them designers and sewing enthusiasts. As I said, it’s not too late to donate and THANK YOU!

And I apologize for all the yelling. I’m feeling a little put upon that I do so much to help people and have to beg to get anything in return.

[Edit 1/13/07]
Thanks to everyone who donated, I made my goal! My friends will find something special in the mail after I get back :)….]

    Kathleen,

Sorry, I meant to do this last month, but with the rush of the season and all. Wish I could have donated more, but all money is wrapped up in production patterns and fabric right now for my launch.

    Have a great run!

Just to make it clear the 25 dollars that was sent through Jess’ paypal account was from the both of us. : ) tehe I can’t believe the lack of support, actually I can believe it. I use to have a donations box on one of my online magazines I use to run and not too many donations coming in. People have to be forced into donating, ie. making the content available to those who give money.

I don’t know that they need to be forced, per se. They do need invoices, though. Subscriptions get paid if they want to continue to get the magazine/information, etc.

The subscription doesn’t have to be expensive if you don’t want it to be. It can range from $5/yr to $80/yr (like I pay for DNR). Frankly, I get better information, here.

Incidentally, I realize I need to ‘re-up’ my “subscription” to F-I. I’ll do that in the middle of February ;-)

Good luck on the run! If my hands weren’t full juggling other charities in 2006, yours would’ve been added to my list. I’ll be planning 2007’s contributions after I wrap up on 2006 taxes. Are you planning to run next year, too?

I wish you the best of luck. I know you’ve worked very hard on this!

Eventhough I sent in a dinky donation for your race last fall, I had wanted to give you something else. I kinda got lost and intimidated by all of the bugs to work out, though.

I had printed out the TEAM logo and wanted to make a one-of-a-kind tote for you to aution off or use the day of the race- or traing whatever. Then, I got bogged down because my one of a kind bags are always totes and that didn’t groove with you using your bike to get around. When I started designing a backpack- (total, duh territory for me) I gave up. if you do this again sometime and think you would like a tote- (and my totes are very snazzy- they sell in my womens line that I do for one store only.) let me know- I’d love to make one for you. Sorry, the backpack idea freaks me out! But, I really did want you to have a Peter and Abby!

If you send me an address where I can send you a check, I will be glad to make a donation. I am on a wireless connection that has been hacked too many times by unscrupulous neighbors to make an on-line credit card donation. Thanks for all your hard work, I enjoy your blog even though I am just an enthusiast.

Good luck at the race! I finally made a donation and bought the book, too. In order to stretch my start-up dollars and not accumulate too many books, I did an inter-library loan for your title. Upon receipt, I read it twice. It’s definitely a keeper. I’m excited to add it to my library.

This is the first I’ve heard of your effort. It makes me appreciate this site that much more. I ran a TNT marathon in October 2006 and was training for another in April, until I got injured.
My husband is a survivor! Thanks for your support.

    Kathleen,
This is the first I had heard of this … maybe I started reading the site to late or missed it. I gave a bit and hope you enjoyed your race.
I’m not sure what the forum is, but I’d be happy to subscribe if I can access it.

Hmmm…I still can’t post without approval. Anyway, I figured out what the forum is and applied. Kathleen, I just want to say that as someone trying to learn the trade, I consider your advice invaluable. Your book was amazing and I love that you’re a fellow New Mexican. So I will support your site. I will have to wait till payday, though! But a subscription is really not a bad idea if it keeps your help coming our way!
You don’t have to post this online … doesn’t matter to me.
    Robyn

I’m sorry I will really miss this site. I didn’t buy the book since I am not a DE. Though I have recommended that many of my clients visit your site and hopefully they have bought your book.

Also I am like JC and decide on the charities I give to at the beginning of the year, Mothers March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity being several of them. My limited budget doesn’t allow for extras.

I visited the site to subscribe and donate, and since I don’t have either of those accounts, would need an address to send a donation to. I really don’t like to give personal info on the internet because of the wireless connection.

I think Kathleen’s running right now, I guess I should say to those that are asking about mailing in donations that Kathleen accepts my money by mail; although, that seems a little more cumbersome bookkeeping wise. She can also take a donation by credit card over the phone. I won’t post her address here, that’s none of my business to do. But, when I called her and asked for her business address, it seemed like she had no problem with giving it out. I don’t have the book right here in front of me, I’ve loaned it out to my sales manager (does any one else have it handy?) I think the book contains correspondence info?

Best wishes for the run tomorrow, Kathleen. I never did find a pic of my brother-in-law to send to you for your jersey, but thanks for the kind offer to remember him in that way. I can’t wait to hear how it went!

  13. Miachelle says:

Best wishes to your run here in Phoenix this weekend, and I hope the cold weather we’re having doesn’t hamper anyone’s success! (I know it’s colder in other areas of the nation, but for us, this is really cold!)

‘a day late and a dollar short’ was a saying where I grew up (but then again we also had an annual festival named ‘toad suck daze’…so what do I know!) Anyway, I’m 3 days late, but hope every little bit helps. Congrats on the accomplishment!

Kathleen, I am such a slacker, I gave money yesterday, hope it wasn’t too late. Pregnancy brain!!!!!

BEST of LUCK. I ran the NYM and loved it!!!!!

  16. Kathleen says:

    I’m back!!!!!!!!!!
Out of nearly 40,000 runners, I placed 352nd in my division (of old hags) and 8887th overall which isn’t bad for somebody who started training four months ago (that’s still in the top 25%). Among chicas, I placed 4264th.

my calves are killing me, it was all pavement and I’m used to running on dirt. I knew better. Live and learn.

Thanks everyone! I’m $900 over my fundraising goal. More tomorrow.
    Hugs to everyone!
